December – Advent time

Advent is the 4 weeks before Christmas and it starts at the 4th Sunday before Christmas. People usually light one candle at each Sundays so there will be 4 candles lit on Christmas Eve altogether.

Did you know that Advent’s original color was purple? This is the color of penitence and fasting as well as the color of royalty to welcome the Advent of the King.

The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival”. Also the evergreens have a special role in the activities of Advent. Hanging of the greens and decorating with evergreen wreaths symbolize the new and everlasting life brought by Jesus. Advent wreath and the candles are typical European custom, it is almost unknown in the US.

2nd Day of December: National Fritters Day!

You could ask: what is a Fritter? Well, a fritter is a fried cake or dough and you can find fruits or meats inside the cake. People loving fritters finally find a day in the year to celebrate their eating habits! The origin of this celebration is unknown, there are no official records of this holiday.
